7-Year-Old Gabriel Garate Dies after Hit by Truck on Lakewood Boulevard at 23rd Street

 
LONG BEACH, CA (July 28, 2022) – 7-year-old Gabriel Garate was killed in a pedestrian accident in Long Beach late Tuesday afternoon on July 26.
 
The fatal crash happened around 5:25 p.m. on Lakewood Boulevard at 23rd Street. According to the Long Beach Police Department, 57-year-old James Barnes of Desert Hot Springs was driving a 2005 Dodge Ram pickup truck west on 23rd Street. He was making a left turn to southbound Lakewood Boulevard when he struck the 7-year-old boy from Long Beach.
 
Garate was crossing Lakewood Boulevard with his father in a marked south crosswalk with the right-of-way pedestrian signal. Barnes failed to yield to them.
 
Garate suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.
 
Barnes remained on scene. Police arrested and booked him on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence.
