Late Evening Car Accident on 5 Freeway in French Camp Leaves 5 People Dead

 
FRENCH CAMP, CA (March 14, 2021) – Five people died late Thursday evening after a car accident on 5 Freeway in French Camp.
 
The California Highway Patrol said the accident happened around 11:17 p.m., March 11, just north of Road Road.
 
A 1997 Toyota sedan was traveling southbound at a high rate of the speed and made an unsafe turning movement. It then went off the freeway and struck a tree and a road sign. It also knocked down 50 feet of chain-link fence between the freeway and Harlan Road.
 
As a result, all five occupants in the car died at the scene. Authorities described the driver as a 33-year-old Stockton resident, and passengers as a 42-year-old Tracy woman, one other adult and two children.
 
The children and one adult, in the back seat, were not wearing seat belts, the CHP said.
 
The agency later said the driver is suspected to have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Further investigation is underway.
