Elpidio Tovar Dies after Being Ejected in DUI Big Rig Pileup on 5 Freeway in Stanislaus County, Daniel Avilan-Tirado Arrested

 
STANISLAUS COUNTY, CA (April 23, 2021)Elpidio Ramirez Tovar was killed in a DUI big rig pileup early Wednesday morning, April 21.
 
The fatal crash happened around 1:00 a.m. on northbound 5 Freeway at Howard Road, just south of Westley. According to the California Highway Patrol, 40-year-old Daniel Avilan-Tirado of Stockton was driving under the influence in a red sedan.
 
A big rig driver noticed Avilan-Tirado and boxed him in with his trailer. In the process, two more big rigs traveling behind them suddenly stopped, causing a pileup.
 
Tovar, who was driving one of the big rigs, was ejected from the cab and died at the scene. Authorities said he was a 41-year-old man from the Five Points area.
 
The other big rig driver had minor injuries. The big rig driver who tried to stop the suspect did not sustain any injuries.
 
Police arrested Avilan-Tirado for felony DUI. An investigation is ongoing.
