Deadly Pedestrian Accident on Atlantic Avenue in Long Beach
LONG BEACH, CA (March 21, 2021) – An 80-year-old woman died in the pedestrian accident on Atlantic Avenue at Anaheim Street.
The accident happened around 3:16 p.m. Friday, March 19, in a parking lot of Smart & Final in Cambodia Town, the Long Beach police said.
Police said the 45-year-old driver of a 2007 Dodge Nitro SUV backed out of his parking spot and drove forward to exit, but struck the woman, who was squatting down, in the parking stall next to his car as he was exiting.
The man who was driving stopped and asked a bystander to call 911. He stayed at the scene.
Paramedics arrived soon after and rushed the woman to a local hospital, where the unidentified victim succumbed to her injuries.
Neither impaired or distracted driving were contributing factors of the collision, which remains under investigation.
