57-Year-Old Woman Hurt in Bicycle Accident on Highway 56 near Camino Del Sur

 
SAN DIEGO, CA (May 20, 2022) — A woman suffered injuries following a bicycle crash on Highway 56 on Wednesday, May 18.
 
According to San Diego police Officer John Buttle, the incident happened at around 5:25 p.m. near the bottom of the exit from east Highway 56 to Camino Del Sur, in a crossing for the SR-56 Bike Trail.
 
The driver, an 80-year-old man behind the wheel of a Volvo XC90 SUV, tried to turn right from the freeway exit onto Camino Del Sur. Then he struck the bicyclist, Buttle said. The rider was on a crosswalk dedicated to a protected bike trail.
 
The victim, a 57-year-old woman, suffered serious injuries. This includes fractures of her pelvis and fifth lumbar vertebrae, Buttle said. The injuries were not life-threatening, reports said.
 
Additional information about the crash was not immediately available. It is still under investigation.
