Eduardo Chavez Hospitalized after Pedestrian Crash on Highway 99 and Childs Avenue

 
MERCED, CA (March 25, 2022) — A man identified as 43-year-old Eduardo Vega Chavez was hurt in a pedestrian accident on Sunday, March 20.
 
According to California Highway Patrol, officers rushed to the crash on southbound Highway 99 at Childs Avenue off-ramp at around 10:00 p.m.
 
Reports said Chavez walked across the off-ramp. At the same time, a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu driven by 34-year-old Deborah Boatner of Merced exited the highway onto off-ramp.
 
Due to a lack of lighting, Boatner did not see the pedestrian in the roadway and struck him.
 
Meanwhile, behind Boatner was 36-year-old Chowchilla resident Karem Aldafari in a 2001 Toyota Venza. When the Chevrolet locked wheels in the collision, Aldafari swerved left to prevent hitting the vehicle. The impact caused the Toyota to went down an embankment.
 
After that, medics rushed Chavez to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto with major injuries.
 
The CHP said Boatner and Aldafari did not sustain injuries. Both cooperated with authorities.
 
Neither drugs nor alcohol appears to be a factor in the incident.
 
The investigation is still underway.
