Driver in Stolen Vehicle Killed in Police Pursuit near 5th Street in Davis
DAVIS, CA (February 27, 2023) — A driver in a stolen car died in a police chase crash near 5th Street and G Street Thursday.
According to UC Davis University, the incident happened Thursday night when a UC Davis officer saw a driver speeding through Russell Boulevard and Sycamore Lane.
The officer attempted to make a traffic stop, but the driver fled at a high rate of speed, continuing eastbound on Russell Boulevard. Subsequently, the driver crashed into a concrete median at 5th Street and G Street before the car burst into flames. The UC Davis officer also crashed into the median and suffered minor injuries.
Upon arriving, officers pulled the driver out of the vehicle and attempted life-saving efforts before Davis Fire Department officials took over. However, the driver passed away.
In the investigation, detectives learned that the vehicle was stolen in Novato earlier that night. They also did not believe the driver was affiliated with UC Davis.
