Driver Dies after Colliding Head-On into Big Rig on Highway 101 in Mendocino County

 
MENDOCINO COUNTY, CA (April 14, 2022) – A driver and a dog died in a fiery head-on car accident on Highway 101 in Mendocino County on Monday afternoon.
 
The accident happened around 2:35 p.m. on April 11 just south of Spy Rock Road. According to the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Department, a brown Nissan pickup truck was traveling northbound on the highway.
 
At the same time, a white Peterbilt truck tractor with a flatbed trailer hauling pallets of soil was heading southbound.
 
For unknown reasons, the Nissan crossed from the northbound lane over the solid double yellow lines into the southbound lane into the direct path of the Peterbilt. It then collided head-on into the big rig.
 
The impact caused the Nissan to burst in flames and the driver died at the scene.
 
Paramedics took the driver of the Peterbilt – 35-year-old Cody Sanderson – to Howard Memorial Hospital with major injuries.
 
Meanwhile, one of the two dogs in the Nissan also died. The Mendocino County Animal Control Shelter took the other dog from the scene.
 
At this time, an investigation is still ongoing.
