Biker Diego Mateo Dies after Colliding with Sedan at West 9th Avenue and South Spruce Street
ESCONDIDO, CA (March 31, 2021) – A man who died in a bicycle accident Friday night in Escondido has been identified.
The accident happened just after 7:00 p.m. on March 26 at West 9th Avenue and South Spruce Street, according to the San Diego Police Department.
Police said 33-year-old Diego Mateo of Escondido was riding his bicycle when he swerved in front of a 2009 Nissan sedan. The Nissan then struck him, ejecting him from his bike.
First responders found Mateo lying in the roadway, unconscious and was bleeding from his head. They rushed him to Palomar Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The woman driving the sedan stayed at the scene and was also taken to a hospital with possible injuries.
An investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the crash and factors involved.
