Security Guard Fatally Struck by Hit-and-Run Driver at Cabrillo Apartment Complex in Long Beach

 
LONG BEACH, CA (June 13, 2021)Derrick Smith was killed when a hit-and-run driver slammed an SUV into a guard station at the Cabrillo apartment complex in Long Beach.
 
The fatal incident happened around 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 12, at the Century Villages and Cabrillo apartment complex in the 2000 block of San Gabriel Avenue.
 
According to Long Beach police, a 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe slammed into the apartment complex. The impact was so violent that the whole structure of the guard station was torn to pieces. The security guard suffered fatal injuries.
 
Smith, a 54-year-old Los Angeles resident, died at the scene.
 
Meanwhile, the driver of the SUV fled the scene on foot. Police searched for the suspect, who remains at large.
 
Century Villages at Cabrillo offers housing to veterans and people who used to be homeless.
