Chase Hammonds Arrested in Olivehurst Wrong-Way Crash Killing Two Women
OLIVEHURST, CA (September 20, 2021) – Deanna Francine Hernandez and Cary Theresa Ojeda died in a wrong-way accident on Wednesday afternoon, September 15.
The accident happened just after 2:00 p.m. near the Highway 65 split. According to the Yuba County Sheriff’s Office, 25-year-old Chase Hammonds was driving a stolen Ford pickup pulling a trailer. Deputies were alerted and chased the suspect.
Minutes later, the pickup went the wrong way and struck a Dodge Durango head-on. The impact caused the Dodge to overturn, trapping Hernandez and Ojeda inside.
The trailer the pickup truck was carrying also hit a Chevrolet Silverado.
Despite life-saving efforts at the hospital, both female occupants of the Dodge were pronounced dead. Hernandez was 36-years-old while Ojeda was 55-years-old.
The driver of the Silverado escaped injury.
Meanwhile, Hammonds tried running away from the scene but police were able to catch him. Soon after, police arrested Hammonds after his release from the hospital.
An investigation into this fatal crash is underway.
