Car Crash into Van Nuys Restaurant Kills Connie Levinson, Injures Five

VAN NUYS, CA (October 28, 2021) – One person died and five others suffered injuries after a vehicle struck a restaurant at 7600 Woodley Avenue in Van Nuys on October 24.

Police identified the victim as 53-year-old Connie Levinson of Woodland Hills.

The crash happened around 8:05 p.m. at Saticoy Street, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The driver, now identified as 18-year old Luis Carrillo-Castaneda, was reportedly taking part in a street takeover. A street takeover is when racers or members of car clubs work together to take over a stretch of a street or intersection to perform various stunts like burnouts or donuts.

Levinson was doing donuts in the middle of an intersection and driving a 2007 black Chevy Tahoe at high speeds. Soon after, he crashed into the building, all while being pursued by a LAPD helicopter. Police at the scene reported that the vehicle was traveling so quickly that it left 200 feet worth of skid marks in an attempt to brake before hitting the building. However, the vehicle still traveled 75 feet into the building before stopping.

Levinson died at the scene.

Paramedics evaluated five others, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Carrillo-Castaneda was arrested for murder at the scene of the incident. On Tuesday, he was charged with both murder and reckless driving.

However, LAFD’s Urban Search and Rescue team was evaluating the stability of the building.

We express our sincere condolences to the bereaved family and friends of Connie Levinson.
