Christine Smith Injured after Fire Engine Accident on Highway 108

TWAIN HARTE, CA (March 4, 2022)Christine Smith sustained injuries in a pickup and fire engine crash on Highway 108 on Friday, February 25.

The incident occurred at about 1:13 p.m. on Highway 108 near the second entrance to Twain Harte.

While trying to protect first responders and victims in a separate crash on Highway 108, a Twain Harte fire engine partially blocked the roadway and ended up being hit. According to Tuolumne County Fire Department officials, it is standard practice.

CHP spokesperson Sgt. Adam Croxton said that 53-year-old Calin Smith of Pinecrest drove his 1982 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. Smith was towing a flatbed trailer that carries another vehicle westbound on the highway.

Croxton added that when Calin noticed the fire engine, he slammed on his brakes. However, due to his speed and the fact his trailer was not equipped with trailer brakes, he was unable to stop. He then crashed into the side of the engine.

Smith’s passenger, Christine Smith, had minor injuries to both of her hands. Medics rushed her to Adventist Health, Sonora for treatment.

Officials do not suspect alcohol or drugs as factors of this crash.
