Christian Karnes Dies in Off-Road Accident in Johnson Valley, Maribel Gonzalez Hurt

JOHNSON VALLEY, CA (February 3, 2022)Christian Karnes died in an off-road accident at Means Dry Lake near Owen Road on Saturday.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal recreational vehicle crash happened on a sand dune during The King of the Hammers off-road race, which was unrelated to the crash.

For unknown reasons, a 2022 Polaris RZR, driven by 27-year-old Karnes, rolled over as it descended a steep sand dune. As a result, the impact ejected both Karnes and his 27-year-old passenger Maribel Gonzalez.

Subsequently, paramedics responded and pronounced Karnes, of San Jacinto, deceased at the scene.

Meanwhile, Gonzalez declined medical transport after having suffered minor injuries.

Following the investigation, detectives learned that both riders failed to wear the protective, five-point harness installed in the vehicle. However, officers are looking to other outstanding factors that could have led to the accident.

Our deepest condolences are with the bereaved family and friends of Christian Karnes.
