Deadly Police Pursuit on Panorama Drive in Bakersfield Sends Passenger to Hospital

 
BAKERSFIELD, CA (April 25, 2021)Branden Lewis Leway Sr. died in a police pursuit on Panorama Drive in Bakersfield early Tuesday morning, April 20.
 
According to CHP, officers attempted to stop a white Chevy pickup truck for a registration violation around 2:17 a.m. in the area of Fairfax Road and Niles Street.
 
Leway who was driving the truck failed to stop and a pursuit ensued. He then lost control west of Mt. Vernon and veered off the roadway down an embankment. The truck landed on its roof in the westbound lane of China Grade Loop.
 
As a result, the 25-year-old Bakersfield man died at the scene, according to the Kern County Coroner’s Office. He was not wearing a seat belt.
 
A passenger in the truck suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Kern Medical Center.
 
An investigation into this crash is ongoing.
