Robert Lopez Fatally Struck by Hit-and-Run Driver in Modesto

 
MODESTO, CA (September 1, 2021) – A bicyclist was killed in a hit-and-run crash on River Road near Ryder Way in south Modesto on Monday, August 2.
 
60-year-old bicyclist Robert Andres Lopez died at the scene, according to officials.
 
The fatal crash happened just before 7:15 p.m. near Bystrom. According to the California Highway Patrol, the bicyclist was traveling west on River Road when a black SUV heading in the same direction struck him.
 
Authorities said Lopez was on his way home after shopping at a sporting goods store on Hatch Road when the accident happened. A shopping bag was found nearby.
 
The driver of the SUV did not stop after the crash and was last seen heading west on River Road. Authorities described the car as a black, early 2000’s Chevrolet Tahoe, with black rims and a black aftermarket bumper. The CHP later released a photo of the fleeing suspect and vehicle.
 
The registered owner of the vehicle saw the posts and contacted the CHP. Olsen said the owner is the “primary driver of the vehicle” and has been cooperative with investigators. The owner was not arrested and Olsen said he could not say whether he was driving the vehicle when Lopez was hit.
 
At this time, CHP officers are still investigating the accident.
