Police Arrest Carlos Acosta after Fatally Striking Bicyclist in Hemet and Leaving the Scene

HEMET, CA (February 14, 2022) – A bicyclist died and police arrested Carlos Arturo Acosta after a hit-and-run crash just west of Hemet on Thursday evening.
 
The fatal crash happened just before 7:30 p.m. on February 10 at the intersection of California Avenue and Stetson Avenue. CHP officials said the 38-year-old suspect from Homeland was driving a 2008 GMC Acadia when he allegedly plowed into the bicyclist.
 
The impact shattered the victim’s bike and hurled him a short distance from the crash site.
 
After the crash, Acosta did not stop to render aid. However, he sped away northbound, witnesses told authorities.
 
Riverside County Fire Department paramedics pronounced the bicyclist dead at the scene.
 
CHP officers tracked down the GMC at a rural ranch and arrested Acosta. They booked him into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning on suspicion of felony hit and run causing death. They also confirmed that alcohol and/or drugs played a role in the crash.
 
However, an investigation into this fatality is ongoing.
