Jesus Martinez Dies, David Cummins Involved in Winton Bicycle Accident

 
WINTON, CA (May 20, 2021) — The Merced County Coroner’s Office identified the cyclist who died after being struck by a vehicle as 67-year-old Jesus Rodriguez Martinez of Winton.
 
California Highway Patrol Officers responded to the collision at about 10:30 p.m. on May 13. According to CHP, Martinez rode a bicycle westbound on Santa Fe Drive just west of Chestnut Lane.
 
Authorities said the cyclist was struck from behind by a 1999 Dodge Ram truck driven by 35-year-old David Cummins of Merced. Cummins was also westbound on Santa Fe Drive.
 
According to reports, Martinez was traveling in the middle of the westbound lane with no rear reflectors on the bicycle and may have had a rear light that was not turned on.
 
The collision caused Martinez to eject from the bicycle. Officials pronounced him dead at the scene. It appears Cummins was not able to avoid the accident and speed does not appear to be a factor.
 
Cummins was cooperative with officers. The collision remains under investigation, according to the CHP.
