Jerry Hodges Dies after Struck by Jose Cacho Jr. on Indiana Avenue in Riverside
RIVERSIDE, CA (July 21, 2022) – A bicyclist died in a DUI hit-and-run crash at Indiana Avenue and La Sierra Avenue in Riverside on Sunday, July 17.
The Riverside coroner’s office identified the victim as 48-year-old Jerry Hodges of Riverside.
According to the Riverside Police Department, a 2001 silver Honda Accord traveled eastbound on Indiana Avenue, just west of La Sierra Avenue around 10:10 p.m. The suspect drove a 2001 Honda Accord eastbound on Indiana Avenue when Hodges rode across the four-lane corridor from south to north.
The Honda struck the bicyclist at what appeared to be a high rate of speed. After the collision, the driver fled the scene.
Paramedics reached the location within minutes and located Hodges in grave condition. The victim was taken to Riverside Community Hospital, where he died less than an hour later.
Witnesses followed the suspect where police found the vehicle shortly after. Police identified the driver as 40-year-old Jose Luis Cacho Jr. of Corona.
Cacho Jr. was arrested and booked into the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run resulting in death and driving under the influence with injuries. Cacho was able to satisfy his $75,000 bond requirement and was released from jail.
The accident is under investigation.
