Ayomipo Lawal Dies after Accident Involving Long Beach City Employee

LONG BEACH, CA (February 25, 2022) – A man died in a bicycle accident at Oregon Avenue and 17th Street in Long Beach on Friday, February 18.

The bicyclist has been identified as 22-year-old Long Beach resident Ayomipo Lawal, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office reported.

The accident happened just after 7:40 a.m. near Pacific Coast Highway. According to the Long Beach Police Department, a Ford F250 pickup truck – owned by the city of Long Beach – struck Lawal.

The preliminary investigation revealed the bicyclist was traveling westbound on 17th Street and did not stop for a stop sign at Oregon Avenue, police said in a statement. The driver of the Ford truck was traveling southbound on Oregon Avenue. At the same time, the bicyclist ran the stop sign. After that, the Ford stuck the bicyclist in the middle of the intersection.

Lawal died at the scene.

The motorist, a 59-year-old man employed by the city, remained on scene and cooperated with investigators. He was an on-duty Long Beach city employee, but his name was not released. The city’s Occupational Health Division assessed him and sent him home for the remainder of the shift, officials said.

Distracted driving, impaired driving, and speed are not believed to be a factor in this collision.

Police are still investigating the accident. Anyone with further information should contact LBPD Detective Loughlin at 562-570-7355.

We send our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Ayomipo Lawal.
