16-Year-Old Benjamin Chavez Killed in Helendale ATV Crash

 
HELENDALE, CA (October 18, 2022) — Officials identified 16-year-old Benjamin T. Chavez of Oro Grande as the boy killed in an ATV crash on Friday, October 14.
 
The incident happened at around 12:23 p.m. on ​​Helendale Road and Blue Water Road. According to the California Highway Patrol, the juvenile drove a 2005 Suzuki Quadsport SUV eastbound on Bluewater Road at around 20-20 mph.
 
The ATV failed to stop. Then it crashed into a 2019 Thomas Type 1 school bus moving southbound on Helendale Road.
 
CHP officials said the bus driver swerved. However, it was unable to avoid the crash. Benjamin sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.
 
Witnesses said Riverside Preparatory School officials made all students stay on the bus. This is to make sure they didn’t have to see anything naturalistic. First responders arrived and helped with the release of the students.
 
Emergency services checked the 59-year-old bus driver for minor injuries. None of the students on the bus were hurt.
 
California Highway Patrol in Victorville handles the investigation of the crash.
