Two-Vehicle Crash on 5 Freeway in Santa Nella Kills 8-Year-Old Boy and Injures Two Juveniles

 
SANTA NELLA, CA (April 8, 2021) – An 8-year-old boy died in a two-vehicle crash Friday evening in Santa Nella.
 
The Merced County Sheriff’s Corner’s Office identified the boy as Angel Alvarez Gonzalez of Quincy, Washington.
 
CHP officers responded to the crash involving a 2003 Toyota Camry and a 2018 Toyota 4Runner on northbound 5 Freeway north of Henry Miller Avenue around 8:00 p.m. on April 2.
 
30-year-old Guillermina Gonzalez of Quincy, Washington was driving the Camry southbound on the freeway with three juvenile passengers at about 70 mph. For unknown reasons, she lost control of the vehicle.
 
The Camry then collided with the 4Runner traveling northbound at about 65 mph, occupied by driver 37-year-old Luis Castillo and passenger 42-year-old Maria Ruiz, both of Oakland.
 
As a result, the boy died at the scene.
 
The two other children, a 5-year-old boy and 2-year-old girl, were ejected from the vehicle. Paramedics transported them to Children’s Hospital San Jose with major injuries.
 
Meanwhile, Gonzalez, Castillo and Ruiz sustained minor to moderate injuries.
 
At this time, an investigation is active and ongoing.
