Adalberto Mendez Killed in DUI Accident on Highway 1 [Sonoma County, CA]

DUI Crash on Highway 1 in Sonoma County Kills 1 and Leaves Another Badly Burned

 
SONOMA COUNTY, CA (April 18, 2021) – Family members identified Adalberto Mendez as the man who died in a DUI crash on Highway 1 in Sonoma County.
 
The accident happened around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 11, just north of Valley Ford Road. According to the California Highway Patrol, the victim and his brother Raul Mendez was heading southbound on Highway 1. Their Nissan Frontier then collided with a northbound Dodge truck, driven by 47-year-old Jason Mantua of Bodega Bay.
 
The two vehicles were blocking the roadway when 25-year-old Winter Nason of Santa Rosa failed to stop his Ford Ranger. The Ford collided into the side of the Dodge before crashing into the rear of the Nissan. The Nissan became engulfed in flames. CHP is investigating whether the fire started after the head-on collision or after the Ford Ranger’s crash.
 
As a result, Adalberto Mendez who was driving the Nissan died at the scene. His brother Raul was badly burned and hospitalized.
 
A fundraiser seeks to help the family cover both funeral and medical expenses.
 
Police arrested Mantua and Nason on suspicion of driving under the influence.
 
This fatal crash is under investigation.
