Maria Chavez Killed, Adolfo Diaz Detained in Hit-and-Run 2-Car Crash on Alisal Road near Hartnell Road

 
MONTEREY COUNTY, CA (May 24, 2024) Maria Elena Chavez de Chavez died in a hit-and-run two-car accident on Alisal Road near Hartnell Road Wednesday.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal hit-and-run happened Wednesday morning. Upon attempting to pass a southbound Nissan Altima, Adolfo Rosales Diaz drove his GMC into the northbound lane. However, the GMC struck the rear of the Nissan that was turning left into an agricultural field. Subsequently, the Nissan careered into a ditch and the GMC ended up facing north in the southbound lane.
 
Soon after, emergency personnel arrived and found a 67-year-old female passenger of the Nissan with fatal injuries. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office identified her at 67-year-old Maria Elena Chavez de Chavez of Salinas. Her 68-year-old male driver suffered major injuries and received care at Natividad Medical Center.
 
Diaz, however, left the scene but was arrested six hours after the crash and charged with hit-and-run. Authorities did not confirm if alcohol or drugs factored into the cause.
