2 Men Hurt, Driver Hits Cyclist on University Avenue in Berkeley

 
BERKELEY, CA (August 2, 2022) — Two men were injured after a car hit a bicyclist on University Avenue near Grant Street on Sunday.
 
According to reports, the bicycle accident happened around 1:00 p.m. on eastbound University Avenue. Under unclear circumstances, a 69-year-old man from Pinole driving a silver Mercedes Benz GL450 SUV struck a cyclist pedaling with a group of riders through Berkeley.
 
At some point during the accident, the SUV turned onto its side, trapping the driver, who later extricated himself from the vehicle.
 
Soon after, paramedics arrived and took the 69-year-old driver and 27-year-old male bicyclist from Suisun City to Highland Hospital and Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley. Reports did not clarify where each man sought care.
 
At this time, authorities have not confirmed the leading cause of the accident. However, they do not suspect alcohol or drugs to have played a role. If anyone has more information, please call the Berkeley Police Department.
