2 Killed, 4 Hurt in Wrong-Way Crash on Highway 101 in Gonzales
GONZALES, CA (June 19, 2023) — Two people died in a wrong-way accident on Highway 101 near 5th Street.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal multi-vehicle crash happened around 3:34 a.m. Sunday. For an unknown reason, a driver of a red 2004 Dodge Neon was traveling northbound in the southbound lane. Subsequently, the Dodge Neon crashed head-on into a black 2015 Honda Civic.
Soon after, officers found the Dodge Neon driver trapped in the driver’s seat, later pronouncing the individual dead. A rear-seat passenger of the Dodge, ejected from the vehicle, also passed away at the scene.
Two other passengers inside the Dodge Neon suffered major injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital. As for the Honda occupants, the driver, pinned in the driver’s seat, suffered multiple leg fractures, and a female passenger of the Honda complained of pain.
Paramedics took the patients to a nearby hospital for care.
Authorities do not have information on what led to the crash. However, CHP officers said that some of the Dodge Neon occupants were returning from a bar in Soledad.
Reports included no information on the victims’ names. Although, we will update this report once we receive more information.
