FREEDOM, CA (March 22, 2023) – A 12-year-old girl was badly injured in a pedestrian accident on Buena Vista Drive in Freedom Monday morning on March 20.
 
The accident happened around 6:58 a.m. at Miller Avenue. According to the California Highway Patrol, the girl from Watsonville was walking across Buena Vista Drive at Miller Avenue. She was using a crosswalk to walk across the road when she was struck by a vehicle.
 
First responders rushed the girl to Valley Medical Center with major injuries.
 
Police later identified the driver as 40-year-old Maria Tapia Lara of Freedom.
 
Alcohol and/or drugs were not believed to be factors. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
