1 Person Killed in Richmond Crash with Big Rig on 580 Freeway
RICHMOND, CA (January 27, 2022) — One person died in an accident with a big rig on the 580 Freeway at the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge on Wednesday evening.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the deadly semi-truck accident occurred around 6:45 p.m. For reasons that require further investigation, an oncoming big rig slammed into the rear of a smaller car just east of the mid-span of the bridge. As a result of the accident, the driver of the smaller vehicle died at the scene.
Following the impact, a fire erupted, but the truck driver became successful in escaping the flames and the vehicle with minor injuries.
At this time, CHP officers have ruled out DUI and believe that the car might have been stopped in a newly designed third lane prior to the accident. However, an investigation into the cause should confirm the exact circumstances.
If anyone has additional information on this fatal crash, please contact the CHP.
