Deadly Wrong-Way Crash on Highway 73 in Newport Beach
NEWPORT BEACH, CA (September 17, 2024) — One person died in a wrong-way accident on Highway 73 near MacArthur Boulevard.
The deadly wrong-way crash happened around 9:30 p.m. Sunday. For an unknown reason, a driver was heading southbound in the wrong direction on the Highway 73 toll road. Subsequently, the wrong-way-bound vehicle plowed into an innocent driver near MacArthur Boulevard in Newport Beach.
Suddenly, one of the vehicles burst into flames and a person was seen exiting from the vehicle that was not on fire.
By 10:05 p.m., the Orange County Coroner’s Office arrived at the scene to assist with one fatal victim, believed to be the wrong-way driver. Due to the crash, debris littered the road, and the lanes remained shut down until California Highway Patrol ceased their investigation.
At this time, officials have not provided the fatal victim’s name or the ultimate cause of the accident.
