Passenger Dies after DUI Driver Rear-Ends Dump Truck on Highway 101 in Summerland

 
SUMMERLAND, CA (March 21, 2022) – A passenger died and a driver was arrested after a DUI accident on Highway 101 near Summerland early Friday morning.
 
The accident happened around 2:15 a.m. on March 18 just south of North Padaro Lane. According to the California Highway Patrol, a Nissan sedan was traveling in the left southbound lane when it rear-ended an asphalt dump truck for unknown reasons.
 
The impact caused the Nissan to veer off the right shoulder. It then struck two trees before coming to a stop near train tracks.
 
When officers arrived, they found the passenger in the car suffering from fatal injuries and pronounced them dead at the scene.
 
The driver of the Nissan, a 21-year-old Oxnard man, had major injuries. The driver of the truck was unharmed.
 
Police later arrested the driver of the Nissan on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
